India Confirms Third Case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV): What You Need to Know

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has confirmed that the infant diagnosed with HMPV is in stable condition. The child is currently in isolation and under strict medical supervision to ensure their safety and recovery.

This case marks the 3rd confirmed instance of HMPV infection in India.

The first reported case involved a three-month-old female
infant with a history of bronchopneumonia. After receiving treatment at Baptist
Hospital, she made a full recovery and was discharged. The 2nd case, reported on
January 3, 2025, involved an 8-month-old male infant who had a medical history
of bronchopneumonia. He is reported to be stable and on the path to recovery.

Interestingly, neither of the Bengaluru cases had any history of international travel, pointing towards a local origin of the infections.

This latest detection comes as health authorities across India ramp up surveillance for respiratory illnesses, particularly after an uptick in HMPV cases in China. Despite these developments, the Union Health Ministry has reassured citizens that there is no cause for alarm.
