PM Approves Formation of 8th Pay Commission for Central Government Employees
New Delhi, January 16, In a major decision, the government on Thursday decided to constitute the 8th Pay Commission to revise the salaries of central government employees and allowances of pensioners.
Information
and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the decision to constitute
the 8th Pay Commission was taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The tenure of
the 7th Pay Commission will end in 2026.
“The
Prime Minister has approved the 8th Central Pay Commission for central
government employees,” the minister said. He said that the chairman and
two members of the commission will be appointed soon.
There are more than 49 lakh central government employees and about 65 lakh pensioners.
The minister further said that the establishment of the new Pay Commission in 2025 will ensure that its recommendations are received before the completion of the tenure of the seventh pay panel.
Vaishnav said there would be consultation with the central and state governments and other stakeholders.
Since 1947, the government constituted seven pay commissions. Pay Commission has an important role in deciding the salary structure, benefits and allowances for government employees. Most state-owned organizations follow the recommendations of the Commission.
The 7th Pay Commission was constituted in 2014 and its recommendations were implemented on 1 January 2016.
